Geo Hazards Society (GHS), a non-profit organization working on Earthquake risk Mitigation aspects since 2004 along with its partner organization GeoHazards International (GHI) focuses on Schools, Hospitals etc. in Earthquake prone regions in and around India conducted a two-days ‘Comprehensive School Safety and Non-Structural Hazards Mitigation’ at Delhi Public School, Srinagar on 7th and 8th of September, 2012.
The GHS staff also trained the Trainers (Teachers) in Basic Disaster Awareness and Earthquake Preparedness. Trainers were taught how to prepare themselves, their families and the students for Earthquakes and other disasters, and how to train others to do so. It surely was an eye-opening experience followed by an interesting question hour session, on both the days.
DROP, COVER and HOLD was the crux of the whole seminar where 280 teachers and more than 30 Class IV employees, inclusive of Carpenters, Plumbers, Electricians and Drivers participated and were given very important tips on how safety of children is more important than any other thing else. Evacuation Drill for the whole school was modified. The key focus areas to be looked into are Children and School Safety, Training of Special Children, Structural Risk Mitigation, Falling Hazards Mitigation etc. The Two Days Workshop came to a culmination with a pledge that Children Safety and Initiatives for Disaster Risk Reduction will be our priority.
